No, it is not only producing nuts, but because the food industry is focusing on rationalisation, cost control and efficiency – it has gone a bit nuts.
Food is now produced on the other side of the world from where it is consumed. It really makes no sense! Food grows everywhere and if we could find ways to produce it where it is consumed the advantages would be enormous.
I will give you nine reasons to rethink food productions:
First, it would reduce the cost of food.
Second, it would reduce the amount of fossil fuels needed to transport it around the world.
Third, by reducing waste (because we throw away a lot of food), we could feed more people and reduce world hunger.
Fourth, it would reduce the environmental impact of food production.
Fifth, by reducing the amount of energy used in food production (because we don’t need to transport it around the world), we could reduce greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.
Sixth, it would increase local employment and improve economies.
Seventh, it would reduce the amount of land needed for growing food.
Eighth, it would reduce the amount of water required for crops.
Ninth, it would reduce the use of pesticides and herbicides (because we don’t need to transport them around the world).
Think about it. What can you do to increase local food production? Eating locally is good for the environment, good for your health and good for your community. It’s a win-win situation that we should all support.
